Jonathan Zambella grew up in Allenwood, New Jersey, spent several years in finance, lost a job, and pointed himself west. In 1996 he landed in Zion — what he would later call his "unconscious true home from birth" — and has spent the three decades since learning every technical layer the canyon system has to offer. He served as a Marine, bounced through investment banking, and arrived in Springdale as a climber and canyoneer looking for something he couldn't name yet. He's been naming it ever since through Zion Guru.
Zambella and his wife Catrin run the operation from 1013 Zion Park Blvd. The services span canyoneering tours with rappelling, Zion Narrows gear rental (cold-weather dry bibs, technical canyon packs), guided hiking, e-bike tours, yoga hikes, and packraft rentals. The Narrows rental side of the business fills a specific gap: Zion's most visited slot canyon system requires specialized gear most visitors don't own, and the Guru has built some of the best Narrows-specific outfitting inventory in Springdale. Their canyoneering tours operate in the technical drainages around the park — rappels, stemming, slot navigation — sized for small groups.
The operation runs under the NamaGuides framework, Zambella's approach to guiding as a practice of attentiveness rather than just logistics. With 30 years in the terrain, he's one of the longest-tenured outfitter presences in the Zion gateway.
