Zen runs across the upper Santa Clara reserve as a connector between the easier Barrel Roll loop and the harder Suicidal Tendencies / Paradise Rim trails. Five miles of slickrock benches and dirt connectors, the trail's name describes the riding — long sight lines, smooth terrain, and a meditative pace once you find the rhythm of the slickrock.

Why locals ride Zen as the warm-up

The slickrock on Zen is gentler than Gooseberry's and longer than Barrel Roll's, which makes it the training trail for riders graduating from in-town loops to mesa-top rides. The grades stay manageable, the lines are obvious, and the trail rewards the kind of riding visiting Hurricane locals describe as "settling in" — finding a tire pressure, settling into a head, and letting the rock decide the speed.

The single tech move

There is one short tech section about halfway through where the trail drops off a slickrock bench through a narrow rock chute. It is rideable for any rider who has cleaned Barrel Roll cleanly. The chicken line walks around it without losing more than a minute. The feature is worth scouting on a first lap.

How Zen stacks into the day

The standard Santa Clara network day runs Barrel Roll first, Zen second, and Suicidal Tendencies as the descent home. Riders who skip Zen and go Barrel Roll-direct-to-Suicidal Tendencies miss the longest stretch of intermediate slickrock in the Santa Clara network. The True Grit Epic race uses Zen as a transit segment between the harder course pieces.

Where Zen sits in the 435

Zen is the trail that makes the Santa Clara network coherent. Without it, Barrel Roll and Suicidal Tendencies would be two unrelated loops at the same trailhead. With it, they form a 12-mile network with a clear progression from green-friendly to black-tech. The trail is also the closest the 435 has to a meditative slickrock cruise — the kind of trail you ride when the head needs the bike to do the talking.
