Barrel Roll

Barrel Roll starts where Cottonwood Drive ends in north Santa Clara — the pavement turns to dirt, the houses stop, and the slickrock starts.

Barrel Roll starts where Cottonwood Drive ends in north Santa Clara — the pavement turns to dirt, the houses stop, and the slickrock starts. The seven-mile loop runs across a low slickrock terrace with desert flats and short dirt connectors, almost no exposure, and the friendliest grade of any slickrock loop in the 435. It is the trail every St. George rental shop sends new riders to first.

The slickrock training wheels

Barrel Roll is to Gooseberry what a green run is to a black diamond. The slabs are wide, the lines are obvious, the exposure is nonexistent, and the painted dots are well-maintained by local volunteers. New riders learn here what slickrock asks of tire pressure and weight distribution before progressing to Wire Mesa, Guacamole, and eventually Gooseberry. The loop also doubles as a recovery ride for stronger riders the day after a big Hurricane Cliffs day.

What the surrounding desert adds

The trail crosses Red Cliffs National Conservation Area land — desert tortoise habitat — and the surrounding terrain includes Joshua tree clusters at the western edge of their range. Riders who slow down enough to look will find tortoise burrows, claret-cup cactus, and the occasional desert spiny lizard. The trail is signed accordingly: stay on the trail, no off-trail, no off-leash dogs.

The Santa Clara network connection

Barrel Roll connects to the Suicidal Tendencies and Paradise Rim trails at the eastern end, which means strong riders can stack a 15-mile day starting and ending at the same Cottonwood Drive trailhead. Most riders treat Barrel Roll as a standalone hour-long ride and do the harder Santa Clara trails on a separate day.

Where Barrel Roll fits in the 435

Barrel Roll is the trail every visiting rider in St. George gets sent to in the first hour of their first day. Red Rock Bicycle and Bicycles Unlimited downtown both put it on their welcome maps. It is also one of the only trails in Washington County a strong child or new adult rider can finish without needing a bail-out plan.
