Paradise Rim is the photo trail of the Santa Clara network. Four miles of slickrock running along a cliff edge above the Santa Clara River canyon, the trail delivers the panoramic frames that anchor most St. George mountain bike marketing — a rider on slickrock with the canyon dropping away on the right and Pine Valley Mountain on the horizon. It is technically blue but rides black for any rider uncomfortable with exposure.
The cliff edge
The defining feature is the exposure. Multiple sections of trail run within a few feet of the cliff edge, with consequential falls if a rider loses the line. None of the riding is technical in the rock-garden sense; the slickrock is smooth and the lines are obvious. The challenge is purely psychological — the trail rewards riders who can ignore the right-side drop and ride the rock as if it were anywhere else.
The frame everyone shoots
The most-photographed point on the trail sits about halfway through, where a slickrock bench juts out over the canyon and the rider's silhouette frames against Pine Valley Mountain to the north. Almost every Visit St. George tourism photo with a mountain biker on a slickrock cliff edge is shot from this point. The bench is a natural lunch stop; locals pause here, drink water, and let the next rider through.
How it stacks with the network
Paradise Rim usually rides as the second-to-last trail of a Santa Clara loop, after Zen and before the descent home on Suicidal Tendencies. Riders who do Paradise Rim first sometimes find the cliff exposure unsettling early in the day; doing it after a few miles of warm-up is the standard call.
Where Paradise Rim sits in the 435
Paradise Rim is one of two cliff-edge slickrock trails in Washington County (the other is Gooseberry's South Rim) that combine in-town accessibility with backcountry-feeling exposure. It is the trail that most local photographers shoot, the trail that most marketing agencies license images of, and the trail where most visiting riders' wives or husbands take the photo that ends up framed in the office.
