Tuacahn Center for the Arts

Ivins · Listed in the 435 Alliance — a Southern Utah register of vetted, locally owned businesses.

Douglas C. Stewart founded Tuacahn in 1995 with a vision shaped by the canyon it sits in: a performance space carved into the red rock at the base of Snow Canyon State Park in Ivins, where the cliffs behind the stage become part of every production and where the desert light changes color as the show runs. He partnered with Hyrum W. Smith, the Franklin Planner co-founder, on the funding side, and the outdoor amphitheater opened the same year — a 1,920-seat room with no ceiling and geology for a backdrop.

What Grew Around the Stage

Three decades later the campus at 1100 Tuacahn Dr includes the amphitheater, a 328-seat indoor theatre, a black box space, a dance studio, a costume shop, a scene shop, and the campus of Tuacahn High School for the Arts — a performing-arts high school that feeds talent into the professional company. The amphitheater produces two or three full Broadway-style productions each summer, plus a spring and fall concert series that brings national-level performers through Ivins. Flooding has twice pushed productions off the stage and into the parking lot; both times Tuacahn finished the run.

Washington County's Outdoor Stage

Tuacahn is the only professional outdoor amphitheater of its scale in Washington County and one of very few in the intermountain west that runs a full Broadway-caliber production season. The 30th anniversary in 2025 was covered by St. George News; the organization received a $325,000 annual commitment from the Washington County Commission and a $200,000 pledge from Ivins City — public funding that reflects the institution's recognized regional importance. The operating budget and EIN (87-0487695) are visible in ProPublica's nonprofit database.

Tuacahn in the 435

For a register cataloging locally rooted Southern Utah organizations, Tuacahn is the performing-arts anchor of the Washington County footprint — a nonprofit institution built in a canyon, sustained by local government commitment and national-caliber production values, and now old enough to be graduating the generation it originally trained.
