The Southern Utah Museum of Art opened on July 7, 2016, as the visual-art anchor of the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts on the Southern Utah University campus at 351 W University Blvd. Architectural Digest named it the best-designed museum in Utah — a distinction earned by the building before the collection was fully installed. The architect, Brooks + Scarpa, took the region's slot canyons as the organizing principle: the roof cantilevers 120 feet over the west façade, shielding the glass from direct solar load, and the interior geometry is organized around the same layered, compressed forms you find in Bryce and Zion.
Five Galleries, Free Admission
SUMA operates five galleries with moveable walls that allow the museum to reconfigure for different exhibition scales — a deliberate choice for a regional institution that needs to host everything from student shows to nationally touring collections. Admission is free. Hours run June through September Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 8 PM, and October through May 10 AM to 6 PM. The permanent collection holds nearly 2,000 works. Programming includes K–12 museum tours, teen programs, university visits, and educational resources for teachers.
The Arts Center It Anchors
SUMA doesn't stand alone — it sits inside a $39.1 million arts complex that also houses the Utah Shakespeare Festival's indoor venues, a performing arts hall, and the university's arts programs. That concentration is deliberate: Cedar City made the case in the 2010s that a mid-scale Iron County city could support a professional arts campus if the institutions were co-located and the programming was year-round. SUMA is the visual-art half of that argument.
SUMA in the 435
For a register of Southern Utah organizations, SUMA is the clearest example of a regional museum built to national design standards and operating at a public-service level — free admission, university-affiliated, RAP-tax supported — in a city of under 40,000. The building alone makes Cedar City a destination for architecture travelers, which was part of the intent.
