Veyo Pool & Crawdad Canyon

Veyo · Listed in the 435 Alliance — a Southern Utah register of vetted, locally owned businesses.

James and Caroline Cottam established Veyo Pool in 1927 on a hot spring near Veyo, Utah, digging a simple cement basin fed by water that runs naturally at 83 degrees. The property passed through three ownerships across its nearly-century life: the Cottams, then Jim and Susan Bosse (who purchased in 1995 and transformed the volcanic canyon walls into the first privately-owned outdoor rock climbing park in the United States before Jim’s death in 1998), then Joe and Sarah Salisbury, who purchased the property in May 2017 to keep it open to the public.

The Salisburys renovated the pool with new water features and updated the locker rooms, expanded parking, added free Wi-Fi, and improved campground facilities. The climbing infrastructure that Jim Bosse built on the basalt canyon walls is now internationally recognized — the Southern Utah Independent described it as a destination that draws climbers from across the world. The pool, the canyon, and the campground operate together as a recreation complex thirty minutes north of St. George at 287 East Veyo Resort Road.

Veyo is the kind of community — a few hundred people in a volcanic valley, dependent on the road stop for fuel and basic goods — that is defined by its specific landmarks. Veyo Pool is one of them.
