Spaceshot is the easy entry to Zion big-wall climbing — a route on the east wall of the canyon graded 5.7 C2 across roughly six hundred feet of Navajo sandstone. Climbers approach from the scenic drive, hike a short trail to the base, and rope up on a wall that has launched more first-time aid climbers than any other Zion line. It is the lowest-commitment way to log a real big-wall ascent in the park.

A first big wall

Spaceshot's role in the Zion climbing menu is simple: it is the route climbers do when they want to learn aid technique on sandstone before committing to harder objectives. The aid sections at C2 are gentle relative to anything else on Zion's east wall; the free climbing between sits at 5.7, which keeps the route accessible to climbers with basic trad experience. Most parties run it in a day. Some bivy on the wall to learn the system. The grade and length make Spaceshot the standard "first big wall" in the park's catalog.

The Zion rule set

The same NPS climbing rules apply to Spaceshot as to every other big wall in the canyon. Overnight bivies require a permit through Recreation.gov. Seasonal raptor closures may affect the route — the east-canyon corridor has historically seen closures from March through July on specific walls — and the NPS climbing page is the authoritative source for current dates. Sandstone ethics are strict: no wet-rock climbing, no chipping, no fixed gear without authorization, and full pack-out of human waste.

A natural pairing with Touchstone

Climbers building a Zion big-wall trip frequently pair Spaceshot with Touchstone Wall as a two-day introduction to the park's aid scene. Spaceshot first as the warmup, Touchstone second as the step up to C2 at a longer scale. From there, the harder objectives — Prodigal Sun, Shune's Buttress, Moonlight Buttress — are the next progression. The combination of accessible grade, short approach, and proximity to Springdale's lodging and food makes Spaceshot the most-used "first big wall" in the 435.
