Washington County Historical Society

Saint George · Listed in the 435 Alliance — a Southern Utah register of vetted, locally owned businesses.

The Washington County Historical Society has operated from the Pioneer Courthouse at 97 E St. George Blvd since the building was made available through a cooperative agreement with St. George City. The Society was active from 1958 and formally incorporated on April 25, 1983. It is all-volunteer. No staff, no paid curator — the people who unlock the courthouse, run the tours, maintain the archives, and organize the walking guides are members donating their time.

What the Pioneer Courthouse Holds

The building itself is part of the story: a courthouse and jail from the pioneer settlement era, preserved on the main boulevard of the city's historic downtown. Inside, the Society maintains archives of letters, photographs, artifacts, and documents covering four distinct historical layers: the 1776 Franciscan expedition through the region, the Shivwits Band of Paiutes, Indian missionary activity, and the 1857 settlement that established the town of Washington and, later, St. George. The archive is searchable online. The tours are guided and free with scheduled hours.

The Walking Tour and the Carpool Circuit

The Society produces downloadable PDF walking guides to historic downtown St. George — the kind of primary-source tool that puts historical context in the hands of anyone with a phone. It also runs seasonal carpool tours to historical locations throughout the county, outside the city limits, where the record of early Washington County settlement is embedded in the landscape rather than in a museum gallery.

Washington County Historical Society in the 435

For a register of locally rooted Southern Utah organizations, the Washington County Historical Society is the institutional guardian of the county's written and photographic record. It operates from a historic courthouse, is staffed by volunteers, and has been doing the work since 1958. The Pioneer Courthouse is the address. The archive is what's inside it.
