Utah Food Bank

The Utah Food Bank opened its Southern Distribution Center in 2011 at 4416 River Rd in St. George — a 41,000-square-foot warehouse on the south side of the city that serves as the regional hub for food distribution across Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane, and Washington counties. Before the facility existed, food assistance in the southwest corner of the state was fragmented across individual pantries without coordinated cold-chain infrastructure. The distribution center changed the operating model.

Five Counties, 34 Partners

The center doesn't serve households directly — it supplies the network. It distributes through thirty-four local food pantries and partner organizations spread across five counties and operates its own direct-service programs alongside that wholesale function. Mobile Pantry routes reach communities without pantry infrastructure; Mobile School Pantry sends food to schools where chronic absences track with food insecurity; Kids Café provides structured meals for children after school and in summer. A Grocery Rescue program works with fifty-one regional grocery stores to redirect near-date product rather than landfill it.

The 2023 Expansion

The center expanded again in 2023, adding square footage to keep pace with both population growth in Washington County and elevated demand that never fully retreated after the 2020 disruption. The expansion included a dedication to a longtime volunteer — local press covered the ceremony, which surfaced the organization's dependence on volunteer labor and the depth of its community relationships built over more than a decade on River Road.

For a register of Southern Utah organizations, the Southern Distribution Center is the anchor of regional food infrastructure — the organization other pantries, churches, and food programs depend on to keep their own shelves stocked.
