Mason McCord interned as a park ranger at Capitol Reef National Park in 2016 and recognized what most visitors miss: this is a whole national park that you can often have to yourself. He filed the LLC for Sleeping Rainbow Adventures in November 2020 with park ranger Allison Moist as a co-founder, launched tours in April 2021, and won recognition from the SBA as Small Business of the Year in their first full year. He's been sole owner since 2023.
The company operates Jeep tours, stargazing programs, and guided hikes throughout Capitol Reef and the surrounding canyon country. The Waterpocket Fold — the 100-mile-long monocline that Capitol Reef is named for — is the geographic spine of the tour program: Jeep routes that trace its length through colored geological formations, and hikes that descend into the named canyons cutting through it. Stargazing tours use the park's exceptionally low light pollution, one of the darkest skies accessible by paved road in the intermountain West.
The company name comes from the Navajo term for the layered geological color of the region. McCord guides with the specificity of someone who spent time as a park ranger learning the geology from the inside.
