Heather Carson is a St. George-based designer who opened Field Study in 2021 — a home decor and gift shop in the Historic District — and followed it a year later with Mojave General Store at 55 N Main St, a deliberately narrower concept aimed at desert-made things. Mojave is the store you stop into when you want something that could have only come from the red rock country and not from an airport gift shop: postcards, pins, hats, cutting boards shaped like Utah, apparel, art prints, bath products, mugs, and a selection of locally made goods, most of it designed by Carson herself. The desert southwest is the frame, the inventory is exclusive to the shop, and the location — in the middle of the Main Street Historic District, a few steps from Ancestor Square — is exactly where a general store with this profile should be.
Carson opened both shops during a period when downtown St. George was filling back in after years of pressure from the River Road corridor. That the shops are still there and expanding their footprint is its own verification. Mojave is the more visitor-facing of the two, built for the person who just came off a hike in Snow Canyon and wants something that looks like where they've been. The store is also where you'll find locals who want a well-designed version of the place they live.
